Philadelphia George R. Graham 1841 First Edition Hard Cover Poor No Jacket
George R. Graham, 1841. First Edition. Half-leather binding with marbled boards. Cover has considerable shelfwear, paper and leather partially detached from boards, Leather spine badly creased and worn/torn through at edges. Endpapers are damp stained and foxed. Back endpaper is detatched from board. Missing title page, index and January Volume 18 No.1. Begins with the color frontispiece and tissue, fashions of the Vol 18, No.2 February issue. Pages are clean, damp stained and mildly foxed but text is always readable. Volume 18 has only the color frontis and tissue for February Fashion and none of the other steel engravings that should appear in this volume. The February issue has a color steel engraving on page 90 'Taking Aim. The March Vol 18. No.3 issue has a detached engraving of 'Lady Isabel' that has been altered with coloring and a black and white engraving titled 'Partridge Shooting' on page 140. February through June issues (volume 18) each have 1 piece of music per month. Volume XVIII also includes three (first printing) tales by Poe, 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' , 'A Descent Into The Maelstrom', 'The Island of the Fay'. At the end of each monthly issue there are over 50 critical 'Review of New Books' by Poe. Volume 19 includes a first printing, and a series of four installments of an essay, 'A Few Works of Secret Writing', by Poe as well as the first printing of two more tales by Poe, 'The Colloque of Monos and Una', and 'Never Bet Your Head'. Volume 19 also includes the revised printing of Poe's poems, 'To Helen' and 'Israfel'. In the November and December issues, Poe dedicates several pages to 'A Chapter on Autography' wherein he reviews the signatures of famous people and how their writing reflects their personalities. Volume 19 has July through December each have 1 piece of music. Part of color fashions for September (1 figure cut out) is detatched but laid in. Steel engravings , 'The Valley of Wyoming', page 40 "The Perch', page 40, 'The Rowsevillers', page 202 and 'The Hawkers', three pages that include engraving 254 through 256. Frontis and tissue for the Fashions for both November and December issues are both included but detached. Condition issued in volume XIX: small hole mid page 29, page 73 has chip on inside edge and 95 has a tear on inside margin. Page 252 has 1/3 tear on inside bottom and there is a small hole on top 1/3 of page 308. None of these conditions affect the legibility of the text. Excellent candidate for repair and rebinding.

A biography of Poe by James Russell Lowell is in the February issue. H.W. Longfellow poems letters. January issue missing front plates, index and pages through page 2. December issue ends on page 284 after the 'Review of Books'. Front cover detached, spine barely legible. Several pages loose and laid in. Scarce.
